"Papa, Papa, can you do that flicky massage thing on my neck again?"
Advanced Bowen Therapy's "Great Reset" 2.0
Hey friends of Bowen Therapy, it’s been a while since you’ve heard from us. About 8 years ago in fact. Wow! That’s a long time and much has changed, but Advanced Bowen Therapy (ABT) is still a part of both of our practices even though it has evolved so much too.
ABT has remained a big part in our practices, huge in fact. It’s almost always a go to for both me as a Physiotherapist and Marina as a Massage Therapist. We unlock so many conditions with simple moves, it’s still a wonder some 21 years after I took my first course.
So, if you haven’t recognized already it’s John and Marina Perone here, and you are hearing from us because you either:
Bought our ABT home study course in the past
Bought our follow along Pain Free Mobility DVD
Bought both or

We want to fill you in on a few things that have happened since we last spoke, and tell you about the new training we have that we hope will blow you away 2.0. -

Since we last spoke Marina gifted me 3 boys to go along with my #1 girl in the whole world for a total of 4 wonderful children. Yep, lots of activity in the house and I love every bit of it. As a result we haven’t been able to keep you up to date with the evolution of ABT, until now.
More on that in a second, but first here’s our family now
That’s right, when you last heard from us our girl was 3 and our boys were still in the “stars”. :)
Now she’s a budding soccer star (like I was :) ), and the three boys are on the road to becoming Ninjas soon. So they tell me!
So what’s with the headline?
That happened 3 years ago when my oldest boy Daniel came to me with a sore neck, a “kink” that limited his right rotation. I was perplexed. Why would a five year old get a “torticolis”? We noticed that he had a right rotation and side-flexion several months before this, but I thought that it was just a temporary growth thing. If you saw him, you would think nothing of it. It looked more like one of those cute subtle head tilts you’ll see in children in photo shoots, sort of like this:
Except that is exactly how my boy held his head almost all of the time. Not only that but he fell over A LOT, especially when playing sports that required the visual system to track well. You see the vestibulo-occular system governs balance and tone. Daniel was not able to track a ball, turn on one leg and move in a different direction well. Not only that but the dual task of running with a ball, or catching one, caused imbalances in him such that he fell over quite a bit more than normal. Whenever he was bumped ever so slightly by another player he fell as well. The long and short of this was that he was slowly turning away from sport even though he really liked it and wanted to compete.
I knew I had to change that. I wanted to give him the chance to play at whatever level he was fit for, and have fun. He wanted to, and I wanted to give him that gift.
So what did I do? I tried to ‘right’ his head manually (by holding it straight) and then asked him what that was like.
He said “Everything is crooked.”
That meant that in order to see horizontally he needed to rotate and tilt his head to the right.
OK then, there’s a postural issue. Easy Peasy!
I said “Well I can fix that!”, and I proceeded to do some neuromuscular movements (Bowen flicks) to release the tight muscles, and guess what? It worked for a while, in fact a long while.
But slowly it returned to a similar position, albeit not so bad.
So I started to tackle it a bit more in depth. We did a full body release, I lined up the pelvis and Marina palpated his cranial rhythm and provided some balance via cranial inputs, and Daniel fell into a very very deep sleep.
Much better. Almost 100%.
I could reset the posture successfully and quickly. Keeping the results longer term proved to be a challenge. This wasn’t going to stop me. I was determined to get to the bottom of this and put that head on straight once and for all. Like I said, we could get it there no problem, but complex movements reset it somewhat to the previous imbalanced state. I needed to find out why.
So I did. I cleaned up all of my previous posture, structure/function/movement and neuro text books. Then I dug into the most recent scientific literature. Finally I explored many restorative training methodologies like Feldenkrais, Musgatova reflex integration, Z-Health, Hanna Somatics and a host of other approaches. All provided some deeper insight, but nothing lasted forever.
Enter Functional Neurology!! (more in a follow up newsletter this week sometime!)
The bottom line is this, we all need >reload< strategies in our work to keep the >resets< that ABT provides.
No exceptions.
We live in gravity and in a real world where other traumas and imbalances are bound to happen. That is why you get clients who love the work coming back for “tune ups!”
Make the change then give them strategies to keep them!
That’s exactly what this newsletter is going to be dedicated to (below) but before that…
It turns out that there was an inner eye imbalance that needed to be addressed with my boy!
This was likely due to being a suction assisted birth at three weeks early. He decided he had enough and wanted out into the real world sooner, but then seemed to changed his mind half way down the slide :). As a result the Obstetrician needed to suction him out. This led to a slight cranial membrane distortion and then a slight reflex delay in the vestibulo-occular processing, and balance issues.
In Short - My son fell a lot!
and long story short, we corrected this with some internal eye exercises from a functional neurology approach that I’m going to be sharing with you as members of this newsletter (more below) and more on this story in a future emailing but for now…
I want to share with you a very time limited offer
before I do, check out these changes in my son.
That (picture above) was then, this is him now
Head on straight
Running like a kid his age should be
Improved balance
Increased stamina and energy
Don’t tell him he can do more pushups than me… Full Disclosure: I already did :)
His low tone issues wouldn’t allow for this several months ago. We would reset postural faults, but he didn’t have the endurance and physiology to keep them due to the vestibulo-occular reflex delay. Now that this has all been reset back to normal, his resting muscle tone has been restored and training has become fun again.
He also got a buck for that too. $2 to get to 70, which is becoming easier each day.
He loves movement SO much that he’s always trying new things now, which is inspiring to his two younger brothers. The youngest taught himself to swim just in order to keep up with the other two.
It’s been an amazing ride for me, and my passion for teaching movement has gone to another level, and ABT 2.0 is going to be a huge part of that.
PS - do you know what’s going to keep us therapists and healers busy for a long long time?
This device:
The other day while having breakfast at one of my favorite diners I saw this:
Four kids entered the restaurant and upon being seated went straight for their phones (one had disappeared to the bathroom at the time of that photo).
Minutes would pass before one would mumble something to the other, or show them a picture from their phone, have a small chuckle and back to their hypnotic devices. I wondered why they all didn’t just do a group chat, zoom call or something of a similar nature while having breakfast at home? Why go out and be glued to your phone?
Notice the postures?
Recent studies have demonstrated that more screen time, playing video games, etc, and less time climbing, jumping and falling will lead to a whole slew of physical malformations and dysfunctions simply because our connective tissue isn’t getting challenged like it needs to. This includes sloppy joints (hypermobility) because they just aren’t getting the impact and neural input needed to grow and become strong.
And that’s partly why I’ve started this newsletter. Manual therapies and Bowen Therapy in specific follow rules of the nervous system. When we start to look at it through this neural-lense, so much starts to make sense and you gain a freedom with the technique you never had before.
Cell phone posture is going to keep us busy for a very long time, but please refrain from dining and texting. Instead, spend time with the person or people you went out to dine with. Socialize in the healthy way! Leave the phone in the car. You won’t be tempted to look at it, and please please please, get your kids off of these devices and out into nature more often. </rant over>
Over and out.
See you tomorrow…
